• PAKSHKAS-SACHA

The situation is not easy. Economically, Ecuador is pretty much at the bottom and the people, rightly so, try everything to get some income. Issues like nature conservation fall into the background here.
The land next to Pakashka-Sacha, an intact rainforest, has been completely cleared for 2 days now. The aim of the deforestation is to plant balsa trees. The demand from China is huge right now and so are the prices. Balsa is a native tree and a very fast growing wood. A tree that grows in secondary forest. To cut down primary forest and good trees to create a monoculture is not illegal but very questionable.
The trees and undergrowth are indiscriminately cleared and then everything is clouded with poison spray, so that the undergrowth no longer grows. The consequences for animals and insects are dramatic.
In addition, this area is a catchment area for drinking water. Fortunately, I have my own springs on my property.

There is nothing I can do about it. We control the 500 meter long border to the neighbor. The goal is also to buy other land adjacent to my property to prevent further such clearings.
