The basic structure of the volunteer house in Puka Urku is finished. What is still missing is the typical palm leaf roof, Paja Toquilla. These leaves are cut and put together in bundles. Each bundle is about 20 kg. These bundles are attached to the base structure in a fanned out shape.
This intricately built roof protects against rain and heat for over 20 years if well maintained. A Paja Toquilla roof includes a fogon, an open fireplace in the house. The soot and smoke keeps the roof tight and protects against insects. In the next days these leaves bundles will be mounted on the new house.
